AMJ series on radiation urologic reconstruction
The modern urologist is adept at diagnosing prostate cancer as well as discussing and prescribing the various treatments. One of these treatments, prostate radiation, has significant immediate and late side effects that make long-term management of these patients difficult. I hope that this series of articles from some of the preeminent reconstructive urologists around the world will serve the urology community well by offering some guidelines for evaluation and treatment of this complex patient population, in addition to other survivors of radiation for different cancers. While radiation has excellent outcomes from an oncologic standpoint, the late effects can be devastating. As patients live longer and the Baby Boomer generation make their way through our offices, these articles represent an attempt at improving the lives of these cancer survivors.
